Four Steps To Calibrate Your iPhone Battery In 2026
2026-03-23 11:20:13 | Battery Care Guide
In this article, I’ll show you how to properly calibrate your iPhone battery. But first, let’s cover what battery calibration does and why it matters for your device.

First, it’s important to clarify: calibrating your iPhone battery will not improve your overall battery life or capacity.

Lithium-ion batteries naturally degrade over time as they go through repeated charging cycles. iOS continuously tracks your battery’s operating range, but occasionally the battery meter and percentage readings need to be adjusted for accuracy.
Have you ever noticed inaccurate battery percentage readings on your iPhone? You might face sudden unexpected shutdowns, or extreme battery drops — for example, showing 100% charge then quickly falling to 50% before shutting down completely. This is exactly why calibrating your iPhone battery can help restore accurate readings.
Four Steps To Calibrate Your iPhone Battery In 2026
How to Calibrate Your iPhone Battery
To calibrate your iPhone battery, you’ll need to fully drain the battery. While some people worry this may damage the battery, doing this only once every two to three months is completely safe and will not harm your iPhone’s battery health.

Below are the simple, step-by-step instructions to calibrate your battery the right way.

  1. Use your iPhone until the battery fully dies
Continue using your device normally until it automatically shuts down from low power.
  2. Let the remaining reserve power drain completely
Keep your iPhone powered off, as there is often small residual battery left even after shutdown.
You may have noticed that after your iPhone dies and you plug it in to charge, it immediately shows 5%–6% battery. That means leftover power is still present. Let the device stay off for several hours to ensure the battery is fully drained.
  3. Begin charging with a reliable charger
After a few hours, connect your iPhone to charge. Always use an original Apple charger or MFi-certified charging accessory to ensure safe and stable charging.
  4. Charge to full capacity while off
Once your iPhone turns on, press the Volume Up, Volume Down, then Side button to power it off again. Leave it charging in this off state for 3 to 4 hours to reach a full, accurate charge.
Even without an on-screen charging indicator, the battery will continue charging. 3 hours is typically sufficient, but you may leave it for 3–4 hours to guarantee a complete full charge.

Does Battery Calibration Actually Help Your iPhone?

Battery calibration was highly effective for older battery types, especially nickel-based batteries. However, iPhones use modern lithium-ion batteries, which work differently from traditional batteries.

This means the calibration methods popularized for older batteries are mostly irrelevant for today’s iPhone lithium-ion batteries, though they can still help fix incorrect battery percentage readings.

To understand why, we explain how iPhone lithium-ion batteries function, what they need to perform properly, and whether calibration provides real benefits.
