Nowadays, one of the trends in the mobile phone market is that the battery capacity is getting bigger and bigger. Previously, OnePlus showed its latest glacier battery with a capacity of up to 6100mAh, and it was first launched on the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro on June 27, 2024. It is worth noting that with the advancement of technology, there are now batteries with more than 6100mAh on the market.
Earlier, vivo, Huawei and others have also launched several mobile phones with 6000mAh batteries. It is expected that in the next wave of new phones, there will be many flagship phones equipped with large batteries of 6000mAh and above. Many people have therefore concluded that battery life anxiety will become history.
However, we also know that a larger mobile phone battery capacity does not mean a longer battery life. Some large-battery mobile phones have the same or even shorter battery life as mobile phones with smaller battery capacity. What is the reason? This is inseparable from the manufacturer's battery life adjustment optimization and the influence of battery energy.
When it comes to mobile phone battery energy, rather than the common battery capacity in mAh, what is the difference and relationship between the two, many people are not clear. For example, the nominal typical capacity of Honor Magic6 Pro is 5600mAh, the nominal voltage is 3.86V, and its battery energy is about 21.62Wh. This means that even if the battery capacity is the same, the operating voltage is different, and the stored energy will be different.
So why don't mobile phone batteries use Wh to mark the energy value, but use mAh to mark the capacity? This is because the voltage is constantly changing during the actual charging and discharging process. In addition, the discharge cut-off voltage of mobile phones is around 3.7V-3.8V, and the values are not much different. In this case, only marking the capacity value can also be compared.
However, this 6000mAh battery popularization war is essentially a battery energy density competition. With the maturity of silicon negative electrode battery technology, battery energy density has been mentioned more and more. For example, last year Motorola released the "Xinghai Battery" with an energy density of 822Wh/L, and this year, there have been many mobile phones on the market with energy densities exceeding 800Wh/L, marking a new milestone in the industry.
It can be predicted that with the continuous improvement of battery energy density, super-large batteries of 6000mAh and above will be further popularized this year. For mobile phone space, which is extremely expensive, it is obviously a better solution to increase battery life by increasing battery energy density without increasing the size of the body. For example, vivo took the lead in promoting 6000mAh batteries in new phones of various price segments, including vivo Y series, S series, iQOO Z series, etc., and their official DOU battery life has reached more than 2 days.
After vivo and OnePlus, it will be natural for brands such as Honor and Xiaomi to follow up. There will be more mobile phone brands launching mobile phones with "DOU battery life of 2 days" because everyone has used similar silicon-carbon negative electrode battery technology with comparable energy density.
At present, although various mobile phone manufacturers have cooperated with companies such as Ningde New Energy (ATL) to develop their own battery brands, the entire industry is still waiting for real change - solid-state batteries may be an answer. As for when it will come, it is still an unknown. However, with the development of technology, this day may not be too far away.
